French

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. Our teaching of French at Saltaire Primary School aims to enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language as a gateway to a life-long love of language and readiness to widen their cultural understanding and appreciation of the world.

Learning a language fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. Being able to speak another language allows access to new and exciting opportunities for the future. We want our children to be able to use their language skills and be confident to communicate with people of different languages. Exposure to a foreign language at a young age provides the foundation for learning other languages in the future.

Our specialist teaching of French is centred on speaking and listening. Our children particularly appreciate the stories, songs and rhymes that they learn in French. Conversation practise is interwoven throughout all lessons and throughout Key Stage 2, children speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
